Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of cultural tourism in achieving sustainable development in Algeria, with a specific case study of the village of El-Qalîa (El-Qliâa) in the municipality of Bordj Zemoura, located in the wilaya of Bordj Bou Arréridj. The village was chosen for its rich architectural and cultural heritage. The study adopts a descriptive and analytical approach, using questionnaires distributed to a sample of tourists and local residents to assess the impact of cultural tourism on the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development. Findings indicate that cultural tourism contributes positively to the social and environmental dimensions by preserving local identity, fostering community cohesion, and improving environmental practices. However, its economic impact remains limited due to insufficient investment, weak tourism infrastructure, and underutilization of heritage assets as economic resources. The study recommends a comprehensive national strategy to enhance cultural tourism through the support of local projects, capacity building, and the promotion of investment in culturally rich rural areas.
